Week 14: The Biggest of Misunderstandings

This week I investigate internet security and photographic composition. Although worlds apart, these two topics would be a crucial part of my final production. As always, visual language needs to be balanced with the technical constraints of the online digital medium.

I also delve deep into misconceptions surrounding renewable energy to find a specific problem my design problem could help with.

This week I take a look at the work of Elastic.

Elastic have an intriguing portfolio of vibrant 3D and 2D motion graphics. Their work on technical graphics really stands out in terms of its use of colour, composition, and pace. Their moving peices grab your attention and sucessfully hold it.

Analysing Elastic's work is like taking a masterclass in contemporary motion graphics. I'm particularly interest in how they render technical animations as this is something that I'm very fond of doing myself.

WHAT IS A MAJOR BLOCKING MISCONCEPTION WHEN IT COMES TO RENEWABLE ENERGY ADOPTION?

To narrow down the list of misconceptions, I thought it would be useful to find one that could be a major block to the installation of renewables both at home and nationally.

My research revealed that one of the major blocking misconceptions was the amount of energy renewables can produce throughout a year. This seemed a promising link as it is definitely something visual communication could make a difference toward.

AT WHAT LEVEL DOES THIS MISCONCEPTION MOST EXIST? (INDIVIDUAL, INDUSTRIAL, POLITICAL)

Although I’d identified a major block, I needed to understand the predominant root of that block. To this end, I had to look whether the misconception was mostly a problem with individuals, businesses, or politicians.

I found that, in general, misconceptions about the annual productivity of renewables exist at a political level and it is this that (a) prevents installation nationally and (b) spills over to make people less inclined to install renewables at home.
