Week 15: Political Data

This week I look at political misconceptions surrounding renewable energy. My hope is to find a project angle that could address any misconceptions.

STUDIO REVIEW

This week I take a look at the work of Superunion.

Superunion are another studio that show how the abstract has a place in mainstream motion graphics and branding. Their often quirky designs have lifted the profile of a number of clients, being visually enticing and often elegant.

Superunion's work is, for me, indicative of a shift in the graphic design market towards a combination of movement and generative abstraction, both areas I have chosen to be a specialist in.

DO MISCONCEPTIONS AROUND RELIABILITY ACTUALLY EXIST AT THE POLITICAL LEVEL IN THE ISLE OF MAN?

Although I had a reliable source that suggested that, in general, politicians might block installation of renewables due a misconceptions surrouding reliability. However, I needed to know if it applied to the Isle of Man context.

THIS MISCONCEPTION DOES NOT APPEAR TO EXIST (POLITICALLY) IN THE ISLE OF MAN

My research of Manx political representatives activities while in office revealed that they are overwhelmingly in favour of renewables, and seem to regularly be pushing for decarbonisation. There didn’t appear to be any misconceptions about the productive potential of renewables. This highlighted the importance of not making assumptions about particular social contexts.

UTILISING A WEALTH OF DATA

Although I hadn’t found evidence for misconceptions blocking renewables in the Isle of Man, I had stumbled upon a wealth of data and information regarding Manx politicians actions, beliefs, and voting behaviour. I saw promise in this data, and grew optimistic about an infographic style design going forward.
